Stinky problem spreads as Van. strike drags on
"Streets and alleys in Vancouver, along with parks, are becoming dumping grounds for trash as the city's municipal strike drags on.
Flies are buzzing above the trash, and maggots are feeding on the food scraps. The mess reeks and it's ugly. However, the local health authority say the situation isn't a risk to human health yet.
"That's not the proper way, but our society today stinks," said Vancouverite Hanly Martin.
Business owner James Jacobson has a private garbage pickup service. That has led some to dump trash either in the bin -- or simply behind the store.
"We pay $150 a pop to get it picked up and because of the strike - they're throwing all their garbage here," he said, referring to the bin. "It was empty on Saturday, and it's been two days and now it's full."
One woman dumped her garbage while a CTV British Columbia crew was there. She first tried to insist it wasn't hers."
